hello! i've been listening to a variety of different music lately, as i have a hip-hop lyric class where the professor assigns us a new album every week. i've been trying to catch up with oomfs' recommendations too, but failing due to busy uni work and working. however, my job allows me to listen to music, so i'll use that window to listen to new things. who knows? maybe i'll also add them to my ipod classic. anyways, let's round up the music i've been listening to these days!
Dead Prez - Let's Get Free (Conscious Hip-Hop - 2000)
i was assigned to listen to this album for this week's class discussions! it's so good y'all, i highly recommend for anybody who loves great, electronic-ish instrumentals, and satisfying flows. i was blown away: hip-hop is not a genre i gravitate to, but i'll legit have to start looking for more records. i love how they start talking about political themes, being proud of their african culture while discussing systems that obliterate black communities, to doing self care songs (mind sex, be healthy, happiness) and back to critiquing corporate institutions. it's a such a great ride. happiness, i'm a african, and propaganda are my favs.
Gustavo Cerati - Siempre es hoy (Art Pop - 2002)
this man has a way with words that really makes you gasp and think "how the hell did he come up with that???" his lyricism creates such beautiful fantasies and worlds, seen mostly in his sophomore album, bocanada, that you have to have a fav song of his that sticks with you. here, the one that has latched on me is "karaoke". my god. one of all time fav songs: there is such an infectious energy to this track that just makes you not give a fuck and dance to your heart's content. i love it so much. shoutout to big brother for inspiring him to make this song sdbhdjsw. a few weeks ago, i've come around re-listening to the album and i love it . i can't believe i overlooked some, but it makes sense: while i thought bocanada had some draggy moments, it compensated for those seconds. siempre es hoy doesn't, especially in the later half, i started to feel the time duration and just wanted the experience to be done at this point. regardless, it's a good time: karaoke, señales luminosas (such a driving song, if that makes sense. well, it makes sense if you drive), amo dejarte así, naci para esto, vivo, cosas imposibles, and casa are my favs
Soda Stereo - Ella Usó Mi Cabeza Como un Revólver (Alternative Rock - 1995)
the song has been in my rotation lately: it gives off an autumn vibe, so it's definitely a signifier for the season and in my life. it deserves to be a tie-in for a season finale theme song of some soap opera, or in a wedding where you still don't feel the sparks and fireworks of achieving a milestone, so you get your best friends and have a serious pep talk contemplating how the hell to go forward with all these emotions and stress. you see the vision? funny enough, there's also whimsy to it, especially the title. when i asked my dad if he understands the title, he got an idea, but it's still a difficult thing to paint an image of. she uses my head like a revolver??? well, whatever you say, i love it.
Tyler the Creator - Sugar on my tongue (Pop Rap - 2025)
i have to get into the album, but I listened to the first two tracks and i'm looking forward to listening to the rest! i also listened to stop playing with me, which i really liked. this song is such a pussy popper. it really makes you want to get up and dance! i like how sexy he is, not only in the music video, but vocally you can here him enjoy flirting to the listener. i like a man with confidence, which, unless you're listening to old records, it's kinda rare?? maybe it's just me: i'm so used to listening to women most of the time. not that much the case these days though. excited to listen to the rest of the album!
Serú Girán - Cinema Verité (Art Pop - 1981)
this song is enough: i would mention the album, but these days, i've been looking forward to listen to this song out of the whole album. charly garcia takes the lead and it's so fragile the execution: a lonely cinema theater and someone's getting teary eyed, nobody there but yourself. an virtual, introspective experience. highly recommend the song.
Dynamo - Soda Stereo (Shoegaze - 1992)
this is my baby jkjnwbdw. where do i begin???? i'm going to keep it short, because this entry is probably so long, but not only my favorite soda stereo album, it's one of my top albums. there really is no other record like this one: it's so unique and when you look at the band's discography, it's incredible that they pulled it off. this album feels like a summer and autumn night: not too hot, a few soft breezes flowing towards you, as you walk between masses of people, but you're ready for an adventure. this album is the whole journey of heart aches, warnings, and yearnings. it's a surrealist love at some points, with relatable moments there and between. secuencia inicial, luna roja, primavero 0, camaleón, and texturas are my favs, but for real, all of the songs are.
SWEET 19 BLUES - Namie Amuro (安室奈美恵) [J-Pop, Contemporary R&B - 1996]
oh woe is me. how i wish i could link to the actual album, but due to her music not been on any streaming service, alas i can't. you can still download her music: internet archive has this album https://archive.org/details/NAS19B, so i wouldn't be surprised if they have the rest of her catalogue. if that's not your thing, you can dm me and i'll give you a link!
it's tough-ish to pin down what the overall genre is in this record, and it's really a mixed bag. when i was first getting accustomed to her discography around 2021-2022 (when it was still up...)i overlooked this album: the only song i came back to was chase the chance cc mix, an absolute bop. as i have her albums & singles on my ipod, i revisited this album, and it just hit. i couldn't believe i didn't go back to it sooner: maybe it has to do with age, as i'm a bit older. the album is demure, melancholic, while also dance-y with its mixes. however, the mixes sometimes drag, or kill the emotional theme sometimes, which results the album being a rollercoaster of sorts. but, it compensates with the quality of the other songs, while others serve as cute filler. my favs are private (the one that hit me the most actually this year), i'll jump, chase the chance cc mix, i was a fool, and rainy DANCE
and there you have it!
these are the songs and albums i have currently on rotation. i hope you had a good time reading this mini-recap, and who knows, maybe listen to at least one of the songs teehee. regardless, see you next time! <3
